Say Goodbye to ‘Say Cheese’: How to Get Real Smiles from Your Toddler in Photoshoots

Photographing toddlers is always an adventure. Their moods can swing from pure joy to total meltdown in minutes, and that’s okay. It’s all part of capturing their authentic selves! As a mother and professional photographer, I know firsthand how unpredictable toddlers can be, and I’ve learned a few tricks to make family sessions smooth, enjoyable, and full of heartwarming smiles (and maybe even a few pensive stares).

Here’s how we make it work:

1. Let Them Be Themselves

Toddlers are at their best when they’re free to explore and interact naturally. I focus on capturing those moments when they’re deep in thought, giggling uncontrollably, or simply gazing at the world around them. One of my favourite types of photos is the pensive look. It’s such a unique and tender expression.

When your toddler feels like they can just be themselves, magic happens. Instead of forcing smiles, I follow their lead, whether it’s running around a park or quietly examining a flower.

2. Bring Their Favourite Toy

Sometimes, all it takes to put a child at ease is something familiar. A cherished stuffed animal, blanket, or toy can make all the difference.

One of the most touching moments I’ve captured was for a client who brought along her child’s beloved soft toy which is a companion since birth. Just weeks after the session, their family dog accidentally shredded the toy. The family was heartbroken, but the photos became even more precious, immortalizing a bond that would’ve otherwise been lost.

So, don’t hesitate to bring those well-loved items. They add meaning and comfort to the session and might just spark the perfect smile.

3. Keep It Short and Fun

Toddlers have short attention spans, and that’s completely normal. I keep sessions flexible, allowing for breaks when needed or wrapping up quickly to avoid meltdowns.

Snacks are lifesavers! Bringing along their favorite treats can keep their energy up and turn cranky moments into cheerful ones. When things start to slow down, I like to add a surprise element, like bubbles at the end of the session. It’s amazing how much joy a simple bubble wand can bring and it’s the perfect way to end on a high note.

4. Be Prepared for Unpredictability

Sometimes toddlers just don’t feel like smiling, and that’s okay. Some of the most beautiful and genuine moments come from their candid reactions, whether they’re laughing, pouting, or simply staring into the distance.

As a professional photographer (and a mom), I’m trained to handle every toddler mood. I’ve seen it all tantrums, giggles, and everything in between and I’m here to capture the beauty in it all.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

Every parent dreams of picture-perfect photos, but sometimes the most memorable ones are the imperfect ones. A crooked smile, a mid-giggle blur, or a sticky little hand reaching for a snack can tell a story just as vividly as a posed shot.

Trust me, those unplanned moments often turn out to be the most treasured. My goal is to document your child as they are quirks and all.

6. Keep Positive, Even When They Push Boundaries

Toddlers have a way of bringing out the best and sometimes the most challenging sides of us. They don’t mean to, but their unpredictable behaviour can sometimes trigger frustration, especially when we’re trying to guide them through a structured activity like a photoshoot.

It’s natural to feel a surge of annoyance when they don’t follow instructions or act out, but during the session, holding back scolding or frustration is key. Instead, use positive affirmations to encourage them.

This doesn’t mean you’re ignoring or encouraging bad behaviour, it means you’re creating a safe space for your toddler during what can be an overwhelming experience. A photoshoot asks a lot of a little one: following instructions, engaging with the camera, and behaving for an extended period. By maintaining a calm and positive demeanor, you’re setting the tone for a session filled with joy and connection.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating memories in a loving, relaxed environment.

7. Incentivize and Build the Session

Toddlers thrive on positive reinforcement. Building up the session with small incentives, like promising bubbles or a favourite song at the end, can keep them motivated.

Singing is another favourite tool of mine. It’s incredible how a familiar tune can lighten the mood and bring out genuine smiles. And here’s one golden rule: no phones. Once a toddler starts watching a screen, the session ends. Music is okay, but screen time is a no go if we want to keep their attention and energy up.

The Joy of Capturing Childhood

Working with toddlers is unpredictable, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. The best smiles are the ones they give freely, not the ones forced by “Say cheese!” My job is to create a fun, relaxed environment where your child feels safe to be themselves, and together, we’ll capture the moments you’ll cherish forever.
